Growing Toward the Light
March Reflections: Moving toward a life that feels more aligned and sustainable
“Just like a tree grows toward the light, we are all growing toward awakening.”
I have been thinking about this idea lately, how as humans we are constantly orienting toward what nourishes us. Not always in a straight line. Not always in ways that make sense from the outside. But in ways that, at some point in our lives, helped us survive, adapt, or belong.
In therapy, especially in somatic therapy and trauma-informed counseling, we often explore the patterns we carry into adulthood, the ones that once served a purpose. The part of you that longs for connection but feels guarded. The part that learned to rely on others for soothing and now struggles to step into agency and self-trust. These are not flaws. They are adaptations. They are evidence that, like a tree reaching for sunlight, you have always been trying to find your way toward something life-giving.
From a neurobiological perspective, our nervous system learns through experience. It encodes what feels safe, what feels dangerous, and what helps us get our needs met. But those patterns do not always update on their own. What once protected you may now be limiting you, even if a part of you is still reaching for something more.
This is where somatic therapy, nervous system regulation, and mindfulness practices become so powerful.
When we begin to attune to the body and develop skills for mindfulness, we create the capacity to listen more clearly. A sensation in your stomach, for example, does not always mean something bad is going to happen. It could be anxiety, a learned response, or an old protective pattern. And sometimes it is a signal that something is not right for you.
The work is learning to discern the difference…
To pause.
To listen.
To recalibrate.
And this is not happening in a vacuum.
We are living in complex and uncertain times. There are real societal, environmental, and financial pressures that shape how we move through the world. There is a constant stream of opinions, expectations, marketing, and noise telling us who to be and how to live.
It makes sense that it can feel confusing.
This is not about ignoring those realities or trying to force optimism. It is also not about trying harder.
If anything, this is an invitation to turn inward. To listen more closely. To get honest about what actually matters to you underneath the urgency, the pressure, and the external narratives.
There is no single right way to live. There is no universal path you are supposed to follow.
There is your path.
Your inner voice may not always be loud, but it is there. And when you slow down enough to hear it, it can help guide your choices in a way that feels more aligned, more sustainable, and more true.
You do not have to have it all figured out.
You only have to keep orienting, again and again, toward what feels meaningful. Toward what feels honest. Toward what feels like nourishment in the midst of it all.
Finding Light in Community
One of the places I continue to find support and nourishment is in community. Not as an escape from what is happening in the world, but as a way to stay connected within it. There is something regulating about being in spaces where we can show up as we are, share honestly, and remember that we are not alone in navigating all of this.
At Wild Heart Therapy + Consulting, we believe healing happens not only in individual therapy sessions, but also in community-based experiences, workshops, therapy intensives, and experiential events.
This month, I am participating in a few gatherings that feel aligned with that intention. These therapy-informed workshops and events are designed to support connection, self-awareness, and nervous system regulation, whether you’re new to this work or already on a healing path.
If you feel drawn, you are welcome to join. Please check out WildHeartTC.org/events for more details.
If you’re in Bend, Oregon or the surrounding area, these offerings can be a meaningful way to experience somatic healing work, mindfulness practices, and relational connection in a supportive environment.
And if not, I encourage you to notice what does spark your interest… What people, places, things, and activities feel inspiring? What feels like something you want to move toward?
Those small moments of connection, whether with yourself, others, or the world around you, matter more than we often give them credit for.
