What is a ‘Somatic Intensive’ and what makes it a unique approach?

  • Maybe you sense that something profound needs to change, but it's unclear why progress in therapy hasn't been as rapid as you hoped. You've gained new insights on a cognitive level, but your mind and body still feel somewhat adrift. This has piqued your curiosity about how a more intensive, somatic therapy approach might offer the help you need.

  • Perhaps you're in a place where you need substantial assistance right now, and the thought of spending months or years in the traditional weekly therapy model doesn't align with your goals for feeling better.

  • Alternatively, you could be a newcomer to therapy who simply prefers the intensity of an accelerated approach.

A Somatic Therapy Intensive is an accelerated form of therapy designed to help you go deeper and get results faster. Instead of attending therapy one hour per week for a year, why not carve out a full day or week for a Somatic Therapy Intensive? It’s a cutting-edge approach that can help you feel better faster. This is a great alternative to a weekly therapy appointment.

Many clients view Therapy Intensives similarly to a retreat. It’s a time when you can disconnect, step away from work, arrange for childcare, or even book a hotel stay. This time is entirely devoted to your needs, allowing you to concentrate on healing, reflection, and integrating new insights.

The Toolbox of Transformation: Holistic Modalities

Our intensives seamlessly integrate a variety of evidence-based modalities to address the complexities of trauma and relational ruptures. These include:

  1. Brainspotting: Harness the power of your brain's natural ability to heal through this therapeutic approach that targets unprocessed trauma.

  2. Yoga: Connect mind and body with yoga sessions designed to release tension, build resilience, and foster self-awareness.

  3. Nature-Based Therapy: Immerse yourself in the healing embrace of nature, allowing its calming influence to facilitate your journey toward wholeness.

  4. Somatic Exercises: Engage in gentle, body-centered activities to reconnect with the sensations and emotions held within, promoting healing from the inside out.

  5. Attachment-Focused Interventions: Explore and strengthen the bonds that shape your relationships through interventions rooted in attachment theory.

  • A somatic therapy intensive is a concentrated therapy session that goes deeper and is more focused than regular therapy sessions. It's designed to make significant progress in a shorter period of time, often addressing specific issues or traumas.

  • Somatic therapy is a holistic therapeutic approach that incorporates the mind, body, and spirit in the healing process.

It focuses on the connection between the body and mental health, using mind-body awareness and physical therapies to address psychological conditions related to trauma and stress.

Techniques include, Brainspotting, mindfulness, and guided breathing.

  • Unlike traditional talk therapy that primarily engages in conversation, somatic therapy includes physical techniques like Brainspotting, breathing exercises, movement, and other body-focused methods as integral parts of the therapy process to release pent-up tension and trauma stored in the body.

  • Therapy Intensives are perfect for people who are ready for relief now.

Individuals experiencing stress, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, grief, or anyone feeling stuck in their healing process can benefit from somatic therapy intensives.

If you have a specific topic, trauma, or stressor that you want support with - this can be the focus of your Therapy Intensive. The dedicated time will be customized specifically to you and your goals.

  • Somatic Therapy Intensives are more effective and efficient than normal 50-minute therapy sessions.

Typically in a 50-minute session, there are at least 5-10 minutes of “check-in” at the start of the session and usually, 5-10 minutes spent on “closing up” or “checking out” at the end of a session - leaving only 30-40 minutes for deep therapeutic work.

A 3-hour Somatic Therapy Intensive allows for 2.5+ hours of depth work. That’s the equivalent of four weekly sessions, equivalent to a month of therapy - in a single day! Doing 1-3 days of this creates space to go deep and become immersed in your healing journey.

  • Absolutely! Somatic Therapy Intensives work very well as an adjunct therapy. I request that you sign a Release of Information so that your current therapist and I can collaborate/coordinate to best serve you.

  • This depends on your goals for the Therapy Intensive. Some goals can be reached in a 1-Day Intensive (3 hours each day), but other goals are more complex and may require a multi day Intensive. This can be done back-to-back days or spaced throughout a week. We can discuss your goals and help you determine the number of days that would work best for you.

  • A 50% non-refundable deposit is due at the time you book your Somatic Therapy Intensive.

The remaining 50% is due on the first day of the Intensive Session.

Cancellations or schedule changes must be made at leas 48-hours in advance to avoid cancellation fee.

  • Therapy Intensives are not covered by insurance. However, if you have out-of-network benefits, your insurance company may reimburse a portion of the Somatic Therapy Intensive. It’s best to call the customer service number on the back of your insurance card to learn the details about your specific plan. Make sure to ask questions like: Do I have a deductible for out-of-network services? Have I met my deductible? What CPT billing codes do you reimburse (i.e. 90837 or two 90843 in one day)? What is the rate of reimbursement for each billing code? What is the allowable amount for reimbursement?

Here is a helpful resource: The Complete Guide to Out-Of-Network Reimbursement.

  • Let’s schedule a time to talk! I’m happy to answer any questions and explore your unique situation to see if a Somatic Therapy Intensive may be helpful for you during a no-obligation 20 minute Zoom call to discuss any questions you may have.

  • We recommend that you prepare by reflecting on your goals for the session, ensuring you have a quiet and comfortable space for the session (if it’s virtual), and wearing comfortable clothing that allows for movement.

  • Each intensive is tailored to the individual, but you can expect a combination of talk therapy, movement exercises, breathwork, and other somatic practices designed to help you process and release trauma stored in the body.

  • Intensive sessions vary in length but typically last between 3 to 5 hours. The exact duration will be discussed during the booking process based on your specific needs.

  • Following your intensive, you’ll receive follow-up support which may include additional therapy sessions, resources for home practice, and access to emergency contact if immediate support is needed.

  • The cost varies depending on the length and specific nature of the intensive. We provide a detailed cost breakdown once we assess your individual needs during the initial consultation.

  • While many clients report feeling immediate relief and a sense of progress following an intensive, the healing journey is unique to each individual. Continued practice and possibly more sessions may be recommended for long-lasting effects.

  • You can book a session through our website, email us directly, or call our office. Our team will guide you through the booking process and answer any questions you might have.

  • We understand that life happens. We ask for notice at least 48 hours in advance if you need to cancel or reschedule your intensive to avoid a cancellation fee.
